Quick Care Tips for Summer Lawn Mowing!

We are now heading to the hottest months of the year, and this can take a toll on our gardens. To help keep our grass at its best, here are a few tips to help you keep your lawn looking its best over summer.

Mow on a higher setting

In spring we tend to lower the height of our mowers as the grass growth is rapid. Over summer the growth slows down, so it is recommended to lift your mower height and cut at a longer length. This helps protect the soil from drying out which intern means a better root system. We recommend trimming off no more than a third of the length.

Watering

The recommended time to water your lawn is first thing in the morning before the sun brings the heat. This ensures the water soaks into the ground but also avoids it staying too damp. Check your local water restrictions first, but a good deep water once or twice a week should be sufficient.

Mulch or catch?

When the grass is short, mulching is an effective way to add nutrients back into the lawn and help with the soil structure. This is recommended on a more frequent basis. Mulching when the grass is too long or wet can suppress growth as the heaver grass clippings can become a place for weed seeds to survive. It is recommended to use a catcher on long or wet grass to avoid this.

Mower Blades

Ensure your mower blades are sharp and cleaned for a tidier look. A blunt blade can leave jagged cut grass that is more susceptible to browning off and dying.

Self-Care

Mowing the lawns can be a strenuous activity at the best of times. Throw in some blazing midday sunshine and you could be putting yourself in danger. Save your mowing for the mornings or in the late evenings when the sun is at its lowest to avoid sunburn or sunstroke.

Enjoy!!

Once all the hard work is done, don’t forget to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour!!
